St Mary's Cemetery of Winona
Winona, Minnesota
Project Description
St. Mary’s Cemetery of Winona is a Catholic Cemetery located at a picturesque setting in the bluffs south of the Mississippi River in Winona, Minnesota. The 80-acre cemetery has evolved with multiple expansions over the years, and a primary goal of the Master Plan is to provide a cohesive solution that blends together all phases of the cemetery, while adding new sections for current and future development. Another important aspect was that the Master Plan’s design should reinforce St. Mary’s Cemetery’s desire to be a Catholic source of compassion performing corporal works of mercy, with a welcoming, client friendly atmosphere with beautiful, well maintained grounds and buildings.
The new Master Plan is designed to help St. Mary’s Cemetery achieve their goals by integrating older sections of the cemetery with new burial sections, feature areas, and buildings better positioned to serve St. Mary’s Cemetery and the community. The design calls for a new, more prominent cemetery main entrance, which then leads to a new chapel and administration building. The chapel and administration building will allow the cemetery to hold memorial services, as well as providing information and burial information to cemetery visitors. Opposite the chapel and administration building is a feature area and veterans’ memorial, and to the south, a new garden mausoleum. There is another garden mausoleum to the south of the expansion, nestled in between two bluffs with beautiful views towards the river. There will also be pedestrian walking paths meandering through the cemetery, as well as a new water feature. The expansion will provide for a variety of traditional and newer burial options, which include: traditional burial, full body natural burial (green burial), private mausoleums, semi-private estates, wall crypts, niches, shared family memorials, columbarium units and walls, in-ground inurnments, cremation gardens, and new garden mausoleum complexes. This mix of inventory, as well as the Master Plan design, will allow St. Mary’s Cemetery to faithfully serve the local community for many years to come.
