Project Description

Sunset Hill Funeral Home, located on the grounds of Sunset Hill Cemetery, has been offering the families of Glen Carbon, IL with full-service funeral, cremation, and cemetery services since 1924. Mekus Tanager was hired to address the insufficient gathering space for large visitations and also Sunset Hill’s very small outdoor area.

The final design modified Sunset Hill Funeral Home to create better utilization of the interior and exterior spaces. Improvements include the addition of a terraced gathering area that allows for outdoor memorialization services, events, and overflow for events held inside. At the lower level of the terraced patio is a columbarium allowing for inurnment.

For the landscaping, a stream was added to provide a scene of tranquility and to serve as a main focal point for the terraced area. A walking path and bridge was added around the stream, allowing a path for families to reflect. Flanking the stream and walking path is burial inventory including columbarium walls, stone memorial benches, memorial trees, memorial boulders, and flat markers.
