Project Description

Mekus Tanager was retained by The Church of the Holy Spirit to assist with the relocation of their 2,700-pipe organ, an effort that subsequently led to the development of a master plan to help guide the church through future renovation and expansion efforts.

The renovation and expansion work, as dictated by the master plan, was then divided into two phases: Phase I involved the organ relocation, sanctuary renovation and a new vesting and guild room. A new air-conditioning system and new lighting for the sanctuary were also added.

Phase II of the project involved the addition of a 10,000-square foot, two-story wing to the existing parish house to accommodate the expansion of classrooms, nursery, offices, a book store, and multipurpose areas. Also included in Phase II was the renovation of the existing parish house and parish hall.

One of the major design requirements for the Phase II addition was maintaining consistency between the existing church building and the addition. This was accomplished by taking a contextual approach to the design and utilizing masonry and roofing that were in harmony with the original structure.
