Resurrection Cemetery - Prince of Peace Crematory and Garden Niches

Clinton Township, Michigan

  • Resurrection Cemetery Prince of Peace Crematory and Garden Niches

Project Description

With cremation representing and important part of Resurrection Cemetery’s regular functions, Mekus Tanager designed The Prince of Peace Crematory and Garden Niches building with the overall design intending to preserve the dignity and ritual of the cremation process for Catholic families. In addition to an elegant interior viewing room and chapel/gathering area, the 2,800 S/F crematory also includes white marble clad niches overlooking a beautifully landscaped garden.

The building is located centrally within the cemetery, allowing convenient access to other cemetery buildings. To reflect this central location, the building is designed to be highly symmetrical with four relatively similar facades also designed to complement the existing mausoleum located across the drive. To ensure longevity, the Prince of Peace Crematory and Garden Niches utilized high-quality, easily maintainable building materials, such as the use of marble for the exterior of the building. Overall, the design provides the building with a sense of prominence and permanence within the cemetery.

The Prince of Peace Crematory and Garden Niches building is one of the first crematories to be located in the center of a cemetery rather than the more traditional ‘hidden’ placement, and upon completion, was the only building of its kind in Michigan.
