Project Description

Completed in the spring of 1957, the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum at Queen of Heaven Cemetery was designed and built in a time when cremation was almost non-existent as a burial option, and had not yet been permitted by the Catholic Church (cremation was first permitted by the Catholic Church in 1963). Due to the rising trend of people selecting cremation in the modern era, Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Chicago decided to add columbarium units to the existing Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.

Designed by Mekus Tanager, the columbarium units were designed to add a variety of inventory in both wood-fronted and glass-fronted niches to blend naturally with the existing mausoleum’s interior finishes and compliment the interior character, and were designed around the building’s existing systems. Within the glass-fronted niches, LED display lights are tied to a motion-sensor switch, which turn the lights on when someone is viewing the niches, and turn the lights off during inactivity to help conserve energy.
