Project Description

As land becomes more scarce, there is a greater demand for higher density of burial in today's cemeteries. With this in mind, Mekus Tanager designed a garden crypt complex for St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles, Illinois.

With a master plan consisting of four phases of construction, the first phase features a nine-building facility, built in 1990, containing 6,300 crypts.  When all four phases are complete, the project will provide a total of 20,000 crypts. The site is designed with its structures surrounding an oval shaped drive, with its primary focus a 170' semi-circular building.  Unifying the entire complex is a concrete pergola that extends from building to building around the drive, reminiscent of a procession.
