Project Description

Seeking to design and develop Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery, located in Phoenix’s “Scenic Desert Corridor”, the Diocese of Phoenix asked Mekus Tanager to preserve and celebrate the natural desert landscape in their building design.

Mekus Tanager’s final design was inspired by the desert, with the garden crypts and niche walls incorporating sloping stucco walls, cantilevered copper roofs, and natural desert field stone. The low stone dividing walls provide a transition between the garden crypts and the surrounding desert, and the complex also includes a committal shelter and water feature.

To help preserve and celebrate the natural desert landscape, Holy Redeemer Cemetery incorporates both desert and turf burials, with a 50 foot easement of desert landscaping around the cemetery to maintain the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive preserve area.  Additionally all trees, shrubs, and flowers are native to the desert, and because of the water sensitive desert environment, there are no water drains within the cemetery.  Instead, the landscaping is designed for the water to run to the lowest point and discharge to waste areas.
