Mekus Tanager assembled the Master Furniture Standards in coordination with and for The University of Chicago. The process consisted of identifying the university’s future needs and also current furniture and product vendors, and then identifying the types of furniture (such as seating, tables, desks, etc.) and the vendors that could supply them that would serve the university’s needs into the future. Ultimately, the Master Furniture Standards Program combined the products and services of 122 different vendors into 3 vendors, resulting in immense benefits for The University of Chicago.

 

Benefits to the university included:

  • Improving the university’s bulk purchasing power resulting in deeper discounts on furniture purchased.
  • Enhanced service to the university from the vendors, including: furniture maintenance and repair, alterations, and warehousing.
  • Long-term durability and quality of the furniture was assured by the vendors.
  • Simplifying the purchasing process and improving efficiency.
  • Provided departmental choices to accommodate:
    • A variety of budgets.
    • Various departmental requirements.
    • Various style and taste preferences.
    • Provided a consistent visual and aesthetic campus identity.
    • Increase in furniture flexibility to be re-used.
